That’s why we use carbon-filament infrared emitters. Instead of just blowing hot air around, these things beam heat directly down. It’s like standing in the sun on a crisp autumn day. The warmth actually penetrates through to the birds, so they stay cozy without you having to turn the entire shed into a sauna. The nitty-gritty on power Depending on how big your brooding area is, you’ll see these in a few different wattages. More watts means more heat per square meter. Here’s the cool part: because carbon filaments don’t get as scorching hot on the surface as old-school tungsten, they put out longer waves of heat. This means the warmth actually hits the birds’ bodies instead of just disappearing into the rafters. One quick heads-up: if you’re installing a ton of these at once, double-check your circuit breakers. They can pull a big surge of power the second you flip the switch, and nobody likes a tripped breaker in the middle of a shift. Built to last (mostly) The filaments are wrapped in a quartz tube to keep them from burning out. We use a specific kind of glass so the tubes don’t snap when they heat up and cool down quickly. Replacing them is easy—just plug-and-play. Now, carbon lasts a lot longer than halogen, but it has one weakness: it’s fragile. If you give the tube a hard knock or a bump, the filament can snap. Once that happens, the lamp is toast. So, just be gentle with them. Getting the setup right These are a lifesaver for fixing cold floors, since they don’t rely on air currents to work. But because the heat is so concentrated, you have to be careful where you hang them. It’s a bit of a balancing act. Hang them too low, and you’ll scorch your birds. Hang them too high, and you’re wasting energy. And don’t forget about your fans. You need enough ventilation to get the moisture out of the air, but not so much that you blow away all that lovely warmth you’re paying for.
