Keeping them alive One warning: that gold coating is a precision piece of work. If you let dust or oil build up on the quartz, the heat gets trapped on those dirty spots. That creates “hot spots,” and that’s how you get a cracked tube. Keep them clean. And please, be careful with your cleaners. Some harsh chemicals will strip that gold right off. Stick to the approved solvents, or you’ll lose that reflective edge.
