
A Quick Guide to Carbon Fiber Heat Lamps
If you’re used to standard quartz halogen tubes, carbon fiber lamps are a different beast entirely. Instead of the usual setup, we use a carbon fiber filament tucked inside a quartz envelope. The big win here? They heat up fast. Like, really fast. It gives you a specific kind of heat that hits the surface of your material exactly where you need it. Getting the power right When you’re picking your lamp, keep a close eye on the voltage and wattage. That’s what controls your heat flux. If you need to hit high temperatures in a hurry, go for the high-wattage tubes—they pack a lot of energy into a small space. But here’s the catch: your power supply has to match the lamp’s rated voltage perfectly. If you try to force too much current through a low-voltage tube, the filament will just snap. And that’s a headache nobody wants on a Tuesday morning. The build and the plugs The quartz glass isn’t just for show; it keeps the carbon filament from oxidizing and burning out. We can also add different coatings to change how the heat behaves. Clear tubes give you that direct, shortwave radiation, while the coated ones spread the heat out more. As for the wiring, we stick to R7s or Sk15 connectors. They’re the industry standard for a reason. It means you can usually just slide these into your existing OEM machinery without hunting for weird custom adapters. It just works. Real-world use (and a warning) You’ll see these lamps all over the place—mostly in PET bottle blowing or curing automotive paint. They’re great because the heat penetrates materials way faster than just blowing hot air around. But there is a trade-off. These things put out a massive amount of energy, which means the area around the lamp housing getshot. If you’re squeezing these into a tight spot, make sure your cooling fans are up to the task. If the airflow is bad, you’re looking at melted plastic parts or your control panel shutting down to save itself. Do yourself a favor: double-check your housing clearance before you commit to a lamp length.
