
Stop Wasting Floor Space on Your Brake Pad Drying Tunnels
If you’ve spent any time on a brake pad coating line, you know the struggle. Those massive convection ovens take up way too much room, mostly because they’re slow. They heat the air, and then you just… wait. You wait for that heat to slowly soak into the coating. It’s a slog. We do things differently. We use shortwave infrared (IR) lamps. Instead of messing around with the air, these lamps hit the coating directly. It’s a total shift in how you think about the process, and it means you can seriously shrink your tunnel length without cutting your output. How the magic actually works Think of it this way: shortwave IR has a higher frequency, so the energy actually dives deep into the coating layer. It doesn’t just sit on the surface. This kicks the chemical cross-linking into high gear. Rather than waiting for the surface to get hot and hoping the heat travels downward, the IR energy just goes right in. You get a full cure in a fraction of the time. It’s fast. Really fast. Setting up the gear To get the most out of this, we use high-wattage quartz tubes. We’re talking high power density here, which is what allows those solvents to flash off almost instantly. This gives you a choice: you can either slow down your conveyor for a deeper cure or just shorten the entire oven footprint to reclaim some of your shop floor. But here’s the catch. You have to be careful with the heat. These lamps are intense. If your venting is off or your reflectors are slightly crooked, you’ll end up scorching the edges of your pads. It’s a balancing act. You’ve got to tune the lamp wattage to your conveyor speed so you don’t fry the substrate. Making it work for your shop Switching to IR is basically a way to squeeze more production into the same square footage. It turns a sluggish, dragging process into something tight and controlled. We see this a lot when a shop is bursting at the seams but the orders keep piling up. The best way to handle it is to wire everything into a zoned controller. That way, when you switch to a different pad thickness, you just tweak the heat. No waste, no guesswork, and every single SKU comes out cured exactly the same way.
