When we’re putting together custom heating walls for paint booths, the real headache isn’t how much power you’ve got. It’s where you actually put the lamps. Think about it. A low-slung coupe and a massive SUV don’t soak up heat the same way. If you just space your lamps evenly from top to bottom, you’re going to have a bad time. You’ll end up with a roof that’s way too hot and a lower chassis that’s still cold to the touch.
Matching the Heat to the Car
We usually map out the lamp placement based on the height of the cars actually coming through the shop. If you’re dealing with all sorts of vehicles, a “zoned” setup is the way to go. We pack the lamps tighter in the middle—that’s where the bulk of the car’s mass is. At the top, we leave a bit more breathing room. Trust me, you don’t want to accidentally bake the roof panels. Then there’s the distance. Shortwave IR doesn’t bother with the air; it goes straight for the metal. If the lamps are too close, you get those nasty hot spots. Too far? Your cure cycle takes forever. We aim for a “heat curtain” effect, where the radiation cones overlap just enough to keep everything uniform.
The Gritty Side of the Build
Customizing these walls means you have to think about the physical stress on the frame. We use quartz lamps because they heat up fast, but they’re fragile. Here’s a pro tip:**Don’t weld your brackets too tight.**These tubes expand when they get hot. If they can’t move, they’ll snap. We use spring-loaded clips to give them some wiggle room. It saves you from a lot of broken glass and downtime. Also, keep an eye on your power. A wall full of 2kW lamps pulls a massive amount of current. If your wiring or breakers aren’t beefy enough to handle that initial surge, you’ll be tripping the power the second you flip the switch.
Speed vs. Quality
It’s tempting to cram the lamps closer together to slash your cure time. But be careful. If you go too aggressive, you risk “solvent pop,” and then you’re sanding and starting all over again. A better move is using a modular rail system. It lets you slide the lamp banks up or down depending on what’s in the booth. It’s a simple mechanical tweak, but it stops you from wasting electricity heating the floor.
