Most brake pad coating lines rely on those massive convection ovens. They work by heating up the air, which then—slowly—heats up the part. It’s a slog. Because it takes so long to get the job done, you end up with these endless tunnels stretching across your factory floor just to make sure the coating is actually cured before the pads come out. We do things differently. We use shortwave infrared (IR). Instead of waiting for the air to do the work, IR goes straight for the coating. It penetrates deep, triggering a chemical reaction and drying the material from the inside out. It’s fast. Really fast. How it actually works Here’s the thing: shortwave IR operates at a much higher frequency than the medium or long-wave stuff you might have seen. The energy doesn’t just sit on the surface; it hits the coating and the substrate at the same time. You get a massive jump in temperature almost instantly. Because the heat transfer is direct, you can usually chop 30% to 50% off your tunnel length without losing a single part per hour. The catch (and how to handle it) Now, this isn’t just “plug and play” magic. To get those results, we use high-wattage quartz lamps that put out an incredible amount of heat. Because the power is so concentrated, you have to be spot-on with your conveyor speed. If a pad lingers too long under those lamps, you’re going to scorch the coating or mess up the friction material. You’ll need a control system with fast PID loops to keep things steady and avoid any overheating. Getting it on your floor Swapping a gas oven for an IR tunnel is a huge win for your layout. Suddenly, you have room to breathe—or room to fit another production line where that giant oven used to be. Setting it up is pretty simple. You wire the lamps to a zoned power controller, and you’re good to go. The best part? You can tweak the heat profile for different coating thicknesses on the fly without having to shut everything down and restart the entire oven. It just stops the curing stage from being the bottleneck in your day.
